The film

Let's be honest with each other, because that's the deal on this site: Skyscraper is not a good film. The action is cardboard, the script is bewildering, and Smith — at the absolute peak of her mid-90s fame — delivers every line as if hearing it for the first time. It is also, for connoisseurs of a certain kind of cinema, completely irresistible.

As a time capsule of 1996 — the fame economy, the straight-to-video gold rush, the Die Hard clone industry — it's genuinely fascinating, and as a camp group-watch it's close to perfect. That's the honest case for the disc, and it's a real one.

Editions: what to look for

Releases are basic across the board — this was never going to get a 4K restoration. Any in-print DVD does the job; check region coding and seller, as catalogue stock drifts between Amazon and third parties.

The verdict A two-and-a-half-star film that earns four stars of entertainment in the right room. Know thyself before buying.
2.5 / 5 — so bad it's a time capsule
